The Federal Aviation Association for years recruited candidates for its Air Traffic Control training program from the military and from approved ATC college programs such as FSCJ. Now they are loosening those standards to meet the rush of retirements expected from controllers hired in the 1980s. Florida State College at Jacksonville is working with nine other community colleges to develop a one-year certificate in high-demand technical fields, funded by a $20 million Department of Labor grant. According to FSCJ's Director of Academic Systems Ernie Friend, demand for workers with those skills is high. The curriculum focuses on composites, cyber-technology, electric-vehicle technology, environmental technology and mechatronics.
