This interview (taped Feb. 1) focuses on immigration. Ms. Totty talks about the students in the FSCJ ESOL program (all legal students). The FSCJ English for Speakers of Other Languages program is grant-funded by Florida Dept. of Children and Families; US Dept. of Education; USCIS and Dept. of Homeland Security; and Florida Blue/Florida Literacy Coalition. Ms. Totty was invited to educate the community about the FSCJ program and how it is helping these students and our community. Many of the students (documented immigrants, refugees, asylees and parolees from political and religious persecution, for some examples) are on the path to U.S. citizenship, after having come through hardships most Americans would not even be able to imagine.
Thanks to Ashli for making time in her day to share the program news with the community and for being a source of fact on an issue that needs to be better understood. She puts a face on some of the people who come here for different reasons from every corner of the globe.
