FSCJ Student Group Receives Award from World’s Largest Human Resources Association

Nov 1, 2022, 10:57 AM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has awarded a 2016-17 Merit Award designation to the Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) SHRM student chapter for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student chapter members.

Of the 327 student chapters from across the United States, Florida State College at Jacksonville was one of 149 winners.

“Our FSCJ student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management is honored to be recognized for Superior Achievement and we are humbled by the recognition,” said FSCJ SHRM President Chasity Frazier. “As president of the FSCJ student chapter, I want to thank the Human Resource executives and professionals—fellow SHRM members in the Jacksonville metro community– for their support, and I want to thank FSCJ for offering the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with concentration in Human Resources. The degree's focus on professional practice in a real business environment, taught by practitioner faculty, has helped us maintain our focus in FSCJ’s SHRM student chapter - a focus that has been recognized with this award.“

The SHRM student chapter merit award program, which began in 1972, was created to encourage student chapters to require ongoing excellence in the following areas: student chapter requirements, chapter operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession and SHRM engagement.

SHRM student chapters have the opportunity to earn an award based on the number of activities they complete during the merit award cycle, which lasted from April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017.

“These chapters truly represent the future of the HR profession,” said Susan Post, SHRM-SCP, East Divisional Director at SHRM and the lead for SHRM’s Student Programs. “Their achievements go above and beyond their everyday academic and work commitments and we applaud the positive impact their efforts have on their schools, their local communities and beyond.”

Over the course of the award year, the board members hosted a number of events highlighting various hot topics in the human resources industry today. From events such as the “Gig Economy” which discussed how to find a gig that complements and/or potentially elevates your career in a changing economy, to participating in various festivals and career fairs across the campuses. Other featured events detailed the importance of being a member of SHRM and the benefits that exist with its membership enlightening attendees about the various certifications available with SHRM making sure to detail the prestige and network abilities that are associated with possessing the certifications.

The Chapter, in collaboration with the Legal Studies group, hosted an event on ADA Compliance with a few well-versed speakers from within FSCJ, as well as a local Jacksonville Employment Law attorney. The event shed light on concerns with disability management within the work environment that often times could escalate into legal concerns.
