JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from State Farm® to expand its ongoing financial literacy education initiatives to specifically target and support the needs of underrepresented students.

The program was designed in 2017 to help prepare FSCJ’s students to make informed financial decisions, become their own advocates and reinforce the vital role they play in the economy as producers and consumers, with the ultimate goal to directly impact economic and financial decision-making throughout the community.

With the help of State Farm, the project will now have the ability to more closely meet these students’ specific financial literacy needs by bridging academic and student affairs to customize and deliver financial education workshops that help develop the knowledge necessary to support the management of their finances as it relates to paying for College.

Through the 2018-19 academic year, FSCJ intends to educate a minimum of 400 students and 50 members of faculty and staff on economic and financial matters to support sound economic and financial decision-making. During the year, the College also seeks to host a national or regional financial literacy speaker to share information geared toward this student population. Additionally, FSCJ will develop and deliver 10 workshops for underrepresented student populations that will cover a range of topics including personal finance, financial aid, debt management, budgeting and saving, financing college and investing for the future.

“We are honored that State Farm has, once again, selected to support FSCJ’s financial literacy objectives in this way,” said FSCJ Interim President Kevin E. Hyde. “We’ve seen the positive influence this program has had on hundreds of students over the past year, and with this new focus on the underrepresented student population, know the financial and behavioral impacts will be felt for generations to come.”
