Taking an ACTFL exam can shorten the time it takes to earn your degree and satisfy a foreign language proficiency requirement by demonstrating that you have already mastered the content.  ACTFL exams can reduce the number of college courses you need to graduate, saving hundreds of dollars in tuition.  ACTFL offers a way to receive college credit for “what you know.”

A score rating of at least “Intermediate Mid” or higher will result in the award of college credit and satisfy the Florida State College at Jacksonville Foreign Language I and II degree requirements through ACTFL language proficiency exams in any of the following formats:

  • Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI): resembles a conversation between two people but in fact follows a standard structure and protocol. The OPI is a live, 20-30 minute telephonic interview between an ACTFL Certified Tester and a candidate.
  • Oral Proficiency Interview by Computer (OPIc): is an on-demand, internet delivered proficiency test.A customized series of prompts based on the interest and experience of the test-taker as elicited during a survey phase at the beginning of the test. The OPIc takes 20-40 minutes to complete.
  • Writing Proficiency Test (WPT): is delivered via paper/pencil and consists of a number of prompts, which are customized to reflect the interest and experience of the test-taker.The candidate is presented with four to five prompts for written responses dealing with practical, social and professional topics that are familiar to the individual and of general and/or cultural relevance, encountered in both formal and informal contexts. The WPT takes 60-80 minutes to complete.
