FSCJ Becomes Code.org Professional Learning Partner to Increase Computer Science Education

Nov 1, 2022, 10:58 AM
With more than 500,000 open computing jobs across the United States, Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) knows how important it is to offer advanced, technical curriculum and practical hands-on training in the fields of computer science, information technology, engineering and mathematics.

That is why FSCJ is excited to announce its new partnership as a Code.org Professional Learning Partner.

“With the demand growing for college graduates with a computer science degree, we feel it’s essential to collaborate with our educational partners to ensure the students in and around our community receive integrated curriculum that will best prepare them for postsecondary education and the workforce,” said FSCJ President Dr. Cynthia Bioteau. “Our partnership as a Code.org Professional Learning Partner allows us to emphasize bringing computer science education to every school.”

FSCJ joins a nationwide network of Professional Learning Partners to support efforts to expand access to computer science in K-12 schools. As a Code.org Professional Learning Partner, FSCJ will provide quality professional development to educators in Northeast Florida through partnership with local school districts including Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties. These counties have combined efforts to spread opportunities for computer science instruction to more than 200,000 students served collectively by their 330 schools.

Through this partnership FSCJ will also work toward building a positive local computer science education community. This partnership directly supports the Computer Science for All initiative launched by the White House which proposes $4 billion in funding and additional support for training teachers to bring computer science to students.

"Code.org is proud to partner with Florida State College at Jacksonville to expand access to computer science in the Jacksonville area at a time when the majority of K-12 schools still don't offer it,” says Hadi Partovi, CEO and Founder of Code.org. “By offering Code.org Professional Learning Programs, FSCJ will give teachers the tools and support they need to introduce foundational 21st-century knowledge into their classrooms and put all students on a path to success in today's high-tech world."

Computer science teaches students what algorithms are, how to analyze big data, how to make an app or program and how the internet works—in addition to coding.

FSCJ will begin the professional development training with local district educators later this year.

Florida State College at Jacksonville offers more than a dozen degree or certificate programs in information technology that allow you to develop the skills to create the latest innovative application, plan and manage an organization’s IT infrastructure, investigate computer crimes, design software programs, develop websites and manage computer networking systems.
