JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) and the Scheidel Foundation named the 2017 Herbert W. Scheidel Community Leadership in Action Award Finalists at a celebration luncheon held on March 28, 2018 at Epping Forest Yacht & Country Club.

Ashley Cetin was named the 2017 finalist. She is a currently a sophomore, working toward her Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree. In her spare time, Ashley volunteers with Hope at Hands, a nonprofit dedicated to providing art and poetry therapy for at-risk youth populations. In her essay, she said, “I want to help people overcome trauma and help with self-expression. I have learned through my own life experience that the arts are a very beneficial tool to healing and practicing self-love.”

Semi-finalists were Jessica Lucas and Kaw Lahpai. Jessica is pursuing her Associate in Science (A.S.) in Early Childhood Management and volunteers at the I’m a STAR Foundation. Kaw is working toward earning her Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree and volunteers at the Jacksonville Kachin Baptist Church, where she assists refugees who are resettling in the Jacksonville area.

All three students will receive scholarships and donations will be made in their honor to the nonprofit of their choice.

“FSCJ is grateful for our longtime partnership with the Scheidel Foundation,” said Interim FSCJ President Kevin E. Hyde. “We know service learning and community involvement enhances the student learning experience and appreciate the Foundation’s generosity toward our College and these students who exhibit exemplary commitment to giving back.”
