For Better or Worse: Student Decision-Making in Remedial Education

Nov 1, 2022, 10:58 AM
FSCJ Interim President Willis Holcombe was interviewed by The EvoLLLution, a grassroots online publication by and for educators. The issue of students making their own decisions on whether they need remedial education to be prepared for college-level work is a hot-button issue in Florida.

Florida legislators have made remedial courses optional for high-school graduates and active-duty military members. Supporters of the legislation say remedial courses impede college completion; while the opposition points out that without remediation, many students won't be ready for college-level work and will likely have difficulty, if not fail. Florida State College at Jacksonville Interim President Will Holcombe is close to the issue, with nearly 20 years' experience as a college president and four years as chancellor of the Florida College System. Dr. Holcombe addresses basic matters, such as the importance of remedial classes and what colleges can do to convince students to go through remedial programming; to how remediation can be made innovative, ensure retention and ensure students are ready for college-level work.
