Florida State College at Jacksonville Partners with KIPP to Increase College Completion Rates

Nov 1, 2022, 10:57 AM
Jacksonville, FL – November 15, 2017 – KIPP, a network of public charter schools with three schools in Jacksonville, announced today that it is partnering with Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) in an effort to increase college completion rates for KIPP alumni from educationally underserved communities. FSCJ leaders, including President Dr. Cynthia Bioteau, joined KIPP Jacksonville leaders, students and staff this morning at the KIPP Impact Middle School campus for a celebratory signing event. The FSCJ partnership is KIPP’s first college partnership in the state of Florida.

“We at FSCJ are proud to enter into this wonderful partnership with KIPP that will inspire and encourage students to succeed in their educational pursuits,” said Dr. Bioteau. “On the forefront of our daily intentions, helping our students achieve success is our driving force and we welcome the opportunity to work alongside the KIPP Jacksonville Schools to nurture these students’ futures early on, before they even walk through our doors.”

As a KIPP college partner, FSCJ is committing to developing programs and support structures to address the college persistence challenges that students from underserved communities often face on their path to earning college degrees. FSCJ and KIPP will work together to develop an on-campus mentorship program aimed at increasing persistence of KIPP students, and KIPP schools in Jacksonville will serve as certified work-study sites for FSCJ students. Eligible KIPP students and alumni will be able to take part in FSCJ’s pre-college programming designed to help smooth the transition into college, including the College Reach-Out Program, Educational Talent Search, Gaining Research and Developing Skills, Format for Affecting My Enrollment, and the Pre-Early College Program.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with FSCJ to help open up new doors of opportunity for our students here in Jacksonville,” said Dr. Jennifer Brown, KIPP Jacksonville Executive Director. “At KIPP, we are dedicated to supporting students on their path to and through college, and this partnership is a big step that will help ensure more of our talented students have the tools and resources they need to thrive right here in their backyard.”

KIPP is a national network of 209 schools in 20 states and Washington, D.C. educating 87,000 students in Pre-K through 12th grade. KIPP has established college partnerships with more than 90 colleges and universities. Twenty-five percent of college-enrolled KIPP students are attending a college partner.

Founded in 2010, KIPP Jacksonville educates 1,080 students across three public charter schools in Jacksonville. Ninety-eight percent of KIPP Jacksonville’s students are African American or Latino.  KIPP Impact Middle School, which received a B grade last year, has consistently ranked among the highest performing middle schools in Northwest Jacksonville.

Nationwide, 38 percent of KIPP students who completed eighth grade or started ninth grade with KIPP have gone on to graduate from a four-year college or university. KIPP’s national college completion rate is above the national average for all students (36 percent), and approximately four times the national average for students from low-income families (about nine percent).

FSCJ joins a growing list of more than 90 KIPP college partners, including Brown University, Duke University, Georgetown University, the University of Pennsylvania and Spelman College. A complete list of KIPP’s college partners can be found at KIPP.org.
