The Career Employees' Council (CEC) is the representative voice for the Career employees of FSCJ, with the goal to be committed to the continuous development of a collaborative work environment whereby the value and respect of Career employees are elevated through increased recognition, involvement and opportunities to achieve a higher degree of excellence. In this spirit, we put a "spotlight" on one of our members each month
June’s Career Employees' Council Spotlight recognizes Curriculum Services Specialist Johnathan Pierce for his extraordinary, commendable work and commitment to his department and FSCJ. Johnathan began his career at FSCJ in September 2023 when he was brought onboard part-time for the QEP Administrative Assistant position, a part of the QueST program in the Office of Institutional Effectiveness. He became a full-time career employee in April 2024 when he accepted the role of Curriculum Services Specialist within the Office of Curriculum and Instruction.
As Curriculum Services Specialist, he contributes to the core processes of Curriculum Services by researching, coordinating and drafting information in proposals, as well as updating and validating data in systems for all curricular changes. In addition, Johnathan assists in several ongoing projects, one notably being the College’s transition to the Coursedog platform, in which he performs data entry and data validation for course outlines.
He also coordinates internally with every team member to offer his administrative support as well as to perform internal reviews with essential updates to desktop procedures and other documentation for upkeep on internal affairs. The role also allows opportunities for him to initiate administrative projects of interest and assist in making existing processes more efficient with effective coordination.
Johnathan assists many colleagues both in the department and Collegewide. He enjoys using his administrative expertise to assist others in the College community, especially since the work in Curriculum Services has a direct impact on students’ programs, courses and college careers. The collaboration with faculty, program directors and deans enlightens him to the quality education that the College provides for our students. When he researches and coordinates new or updated course content, he feels honored to assist in providing students the opportunity for cutting-edge education in evolving industries. Witnessing the innovations of several sectors in the workforce and its reflection into our College’s curriculum is profound both professionally and personally to him.
He values all forms of collaboration and opportunities to share expertise within the College community. He truly appreciates each individual’s time and effort into professional collaboration. He is happy to help out anyone, especially as a career employee representative.
Johnathan has a bachelor’s degree in Latin and Greek from Florida State University and a master’s degree in Latin from the University of Georgia. In his studies, he also achieved a minor in Spanish, with undergraduate coursework in Education as well. In his post-graduate career, Johnathan had the opportunity to instruct undergraduate-level Latin, Greek and Mythology classes. His graduate concentration was in Latin education with the opportunity to develop a teaching resource/textbook in lieu of a thesis project. His background in Latin and Education has led Johnathan to teaching high school Latin for two years after which he transitioned into education administration at FSCJ.
He also serves as a Curriculum Services representative (in an informational/administrative role) on the Curriculum committee, the approving body of faculty et al. for curricular change in the College. In addition, he serves as a member of the NEXUS committee, the body of interdepartmental representatives who communicate on curricular impacts across the College.
Johnathan has volunteered for local FJCL events (the organization which holds events and competitions for middle/high school students) in planning and executing segments within the events. Johnathan has planned to focus on establishing his career and life at FSCJ and then researching volunteering opportunities within and outside of FSCJ in the future.
Johnathan is an avid cook and gamer. He enjoys cooking his classic favorites, attempting to fine tune the recipe each time he cooks. His favorite dishes to make are tomato sauce-based foods with different rices or pastas as a vehicle for his delicious sauce and varied proteins for a different flavor profile. Johnathan plays video games in his free time. Since he was a child, Johnathan was very interested in video games, especially those which are challenging, mentally and mechanically. Gaming is also a social outlet for Johnathan since he is involved in online gaming communities, getting to meet and game with like-minded individuals across the world!
