Summer melt remains a hurdle that trips up many college-intending applicants, while challenging resourceful recruitment and admissions professionals to create strategies to thwart its impact. The phenomenon is aptly called "summer melt" due to the melting away of potential freshman enrollments heading into the Fall Term. It occurs when the connection recent graduates had to helpful college resources and guidance in their high schools evaporates during the critical summer after high school graduation. Summer melt’s negative impact is felt most in minority and vulnerable student populations.
This summer, to freeze summer melt in our service district, the College has revised and amplified messaging to high school graduates, aiming to nudge well-meaning applicants to take deliberate steps toward healthy fall enrollment. Launched in early June via the Element451 student engagement platform, the summer success campaign seeks to achieve success by reminding applicants of the personal and career benefits of attending college, while highlighting important college resources and critical steps to enrollment.
