The Association of Florida Colleges (AFC) recently held the 74th Annual Conference and Meeting held in Orlando November 1 through 3. On Wednesday, Region and Commission meetings took place followed by the First Timers’ Orientation. This year, the AFC saw a record 42 first-time Conference attendees. The Opening General Session featured Dr. Jeff Williamson, Director of the Office of Communications for Orange County Government, whose message resonated the need to “fly and not be dependent on the 200 legs a caterpillar has,” emphasizing the need for transformation (like the caterpillar to the butterfly). Thursday was jam packed with Professional Development sessions on a variety of topics. Evening festivities included the Presidential Gala. The conference concluded on Friday with the Closing Brunch and awards ceremony.

Congratulations to the FSCJ Chapter for being named among the 2023 Platinum Chapter awardees! There are four levels of distinction: Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Chapter of the Year. Previously, FSCJ has been honored with Gold Chapter (2010, 2012, 2013, 2021 and 2022). During the Brunch and Awards Ceremony, FSCJ Associate Director of Dual Enrollment Matt Wetzel was sworn in as the 2024 AFC President. Matt’s speech was very moving with the introduction of next year’s theme: “Keep Moving, Be Active, Transform your Mind.” The FSCJ Dual Enrollment team and other FSCJ colleagues were present in support of Matt as he leads the AFC into 2024.

AFC Region II was named Region of the Year with Bryan Stewart, Administrative Support Manager, at the helm as Region Director. The following colleges make up Region II: FSCJ, Santa Fe College, and St. Johns River State College. Region II has been honored as Region of the Year four of the last six years (2018, 2019, 2020 and 2023).

This is a great time for FSCJ to showcase our employees and campuses. It’s time to get involved (keep moving), get active, transform your mind and let’s lead FSCJ and AFC forward.
