The Career Employees' Council (CEC) is the representative voice for the Career employees of FSCJ, with the goal to be committed to the continuous development of a collaborative work environment whereby the value and respect of Career employees are elevated through increased recognition, involvement and opportunities to achieve a higher degree of excellence. In this spirit, we put a "spotlight" on one of our members each month.

October’s Career Employees' Council (CEC) Spotlight illuminates Academic Department Coordinator Dr. Cynthia Motzny, who began working at FSCJ in June 2019 and supervises the Natural Sciences labs.

Each campus and center has biological and physical science labs for biology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, physics and environmental and earth space science courses, and it is her job to collaborate with lab managers, faculty and administration to ensure the labs run smoothly and safely. Dr. Motzny said, "Our lab manager team rocks! I enjoy the collaborative environment the team creates."

Dr. Motzny excels in aiding in the objectives of the CEC, serving as secretary for the CEC board. In this role, she monitors the CEC email, sends out meeting invites for the monthly meetings, takes minutes and helps other board members as needed. She also serves on committees and teams to represent career employees in College policies and decisions. She serves as a member of Employee Benefit Advising Committee, which discusses benefits such as health insurance, the APC/CEC team member enhancement committee which discusses issues concerning career employees with APC representatives, and the Interest-Based Problem-Solving CARE committee which drafted a proposal about salary, classification, titles and career pathways to present to the executive leadership team. In addition to her other duties, she is also an alternate for the APM committee. She sat on the Guided Pathway Pillar 1 Team and the Visionary Impact Plan (VIP) 2.0 and Service Team 2.3 as well.

She says, “It is important to have career team members input into decisions that shape the future of the College."

Dr. Motzny earned her Bachelor’s in Biology at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Her dissertation was on the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) embryonic segmental development studies. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois, where she studied the sex determination of the nematode C. elegans.

In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, spending time with family and friends, and being outside, especially at the beach.

Our spotlight seeks to showcase a CEC representative from each campus/center at least once a year. Nominations for the spotlight may be directed to the CEC Publicity Committee Chair Vanessa Gordon at CEC@fscj.edu.
