Get to know Mark and learn about some of his ideas and plans as he joins FSCJ.

Q. As you embrace your role as Chief Human Resource Officer, what strengths do you see in FSCJ’s current structure?

A. During the interview process I was very impressed with everyone I interacted with. I understand there is a desire to thoroughly evaluate the services HR provides to the campuses, and having the support of the president and cabinet is critical.

The participatory governance model can provide HR a checkpoint to visit with various groups on campus where we can receive feedback on how HR is serving them.

Finally I was impressed in learning about the involvement of the campuses and engagement of the community in developing the core values and strategic planning.

Q. What areas do you plan to focus your attention on first?

A. Time will tell what areas take priority, but my initial plan will be to learn from the HR team and faculty and staff what is working and where roadblocks may exist in their efforts to successfully fulfill FSCJ's mission.

Q. What area do you think the College can improve the most on in terms of human resource services?

A. Until I start assessing HR services throughout the organization it is difficult to provide specifics, but one thing I believe is that the new ERP system provides a great opportunity to evaluate workflows and ultimately streamline tasks by utilizing technology.

Q. What expectations do you have for the remainder of the 2014-15 academic year?

A. I plan to learn what each member of the HR team does to support each campus, and start prioritizing what needs to be accomplished as we learn about concerns. Also as the College's strategic plan is finalized, HR will evaluate areas that need our direct support and determine specific steps necessary to accomplish the goals.

Q. What thoughts do you have for your team as you join the FSCJ family?

A. I look forward to joining FSCJ and working with them. Without question they are integral to the success of HR.

Getting to Know FSCJ’s Chief Human Resource Officer

Q. What was your favorite food when you were a child?

A. I'll be very specific here. It was Pizza Hut thin 'n crispy pepperoni pizza with French/Catalina dressing. The dressing influence was part of growing up in Biloxi, Mississippi. Shrimp and steak were also right up there.

Q. What's the #1 most played song on your iPod?

A. Not sure but probably All the Small Things by Blink-182 or One of These Days by FFH.

Q. When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time?

A. Probably checking something on my phone...social media, espn.com or news sites. Both of my kids are involved with sports throughout the year so that is where time is spent as well.

Q. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?

A. I am a child of the 80s and then the grunge movement during college so here’s a double album worth of songs that run the gamut. Eye of the Tiger - Survivor, Jack & Diane - John Mellencamp, Where The Streets Have No Name - U2, Livin' On A Prayer and I'll Be There For You - Bon Jovi, Free Fallin' - Tom Petty, Ames Turnout Misery - HARDSoul Poets, Unknown Thought - Pearl Jam, All Apologies - Nirvana, Center Of The Mark - 4Him, Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day, The Space Between - Dave Matthews Band, Hey Man (Now You're Really Living) - Eels, Rebirthing - Skillet, God With Us - MercyMe, There Is A God - 33Miles
