Fire Academy Students Receive Special Learning Opportunities
On May 23, students in FSCJ's Fire Academy of the South volunteered with Operation New Hope, a nonprofit program that works to strengthen our community by creating opportunities for ex-offenders to enter the workforce.
During the day, students provided general labor such as painting, cleaning and gardening. The opportunity also introduced them to different neighborhoods throughout Jacksonville where they may even come to serve as they complete their training.
On June 8, the North American Vehicle Rescue Association held an event at FSCJ where several fire departments – Miami-Dade, Delray Beach, Fort Lauderdale, North Collier and Jacksonville – competed in a car extrication exercise. Delray Beach finished the competition with the shortest average time.
Students were in attendance to observe the exercise and to gain a firsthand look at the skill and supreme dedication these firefighters have as first responders.
