February is American Heart Month

Jun 9, 2022, 12:45 PM

The leading cause of death for men and women in the United States is heart disease, which is why February is an excellent time to evaluate your lifestyle and make small changes that can make a big impact on your heart health.

Heart Disease by the Numbers:

  • In the United States, one in three deaths is caused by heart disease or stroke.
  • Every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event.
  • This year, 785,000 people will have their first heart attack.

Below are some simple steps you can take to improve your heart health:

  • Keeping regular preventative check-ups can help you take charge of your health. Schedule a visit with your doctor to talk about heart health. Partner with your doctor and health care team to set goals for improving your heart health. Ask questions and follow their advice.
  • Exercise should become a part of your daily routine. Walking as little at 15 minutes each day can significantly improve your health. Start slow and gradually increase the time and distance you exercise.
  • Prepare more heart-healthy meals at home at least three times each week. Lower sodium wherever possible by substituting herbs and spices.
  • Stop smoking. Among many other benefits, quitting can cut your risk for heart disease and stroke.
  • Take medication as prescribed.
