To close things out for 2019, here’s a wrap-up of some recent events that occurred in the Office of Recruitment and Admissions.
Instant Decision Days - December marks an important time for students at schools within Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) with Instant Decision Days (IDD) taking place across the district. Organized by DCPS and community partners, IDD events are geared toward providing opportunities to first generation and low-income students who might otherwise not go to college. During these events, college representatives travel to the high schools and conduct face-to-face interviews with the students, who have the chance to get accepted on the spot and earn potential scholarships. FSCJ participates in all IDD events annually and helps students complete their application for admission and provides scholarship opportunities.
Sandalwood Career & Workforce Day - FSCJ hosted the second Career & Workforce Day of the fall at Sandalwood High School. These events, now in their second year, are FSCJ exclusive events hosted at high schools throughout our service area and feature faculty and program managers from over 25 different areas of study at the College. They are a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with our faculty and staff and learn about our wide variety of programs. More events are scheduled throughout Duval and Nassau counties for this Spring Term, so be on the lookout for more information.
UNF Crop Visit - In early November, FSCJ Recruitment and Admissions along with colleagues in Engineering and Information Technology hosted more than 40 students from the UNF CROP (College Reach-Out Program) at the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) at our Downtown Campus. The visit included a campus tour, Career Coach demonstrations, and interactive exploration of ATC facilities and labs led by faculty and staff from various FSCJ programs. Norman Dickerson, director of the UNF CROP program, shared the following:
“Our students had a great time during the workshops led by Bonnie Lucey and the Recruitment staff in the morning. I am grateful that she explored the Career Coach website with our students which provided exposure to another resource to help them explore career options. The staff did a great job assisting our students with completion of the career assessment on the Career Coach site along with all C.R.O.P seniors completion of the FSCJ admission application. The effort given by the Office of Student Recruitment staff was amazing.
Dr. Babi and Ernest provided an engaging overview of the Information Technology program through review of certificate and degree programs available along with interactive web activities teaching students about cyber security and coding. Our students were fully engaged with each activity and continued to discuss the post-secondary options provided through the FSCJ Information Technology program after the trip. I am grateful for our partnership and each of you willing to take out time to work with our students.”
BEACON Wrap-Up
The month of November means BEACON (Bringing Economic and Career Opportunities Nearer) at DCPS. We are proud to once again have supported these Financial Aid, Financial Literacy, and Post-Secondary planning events with our DCPS partners. Recruitment and Admissions, along with various faculty and Financial Aid volunteers, were able to participate in every single event hosted by DCPS. If you are interested in volunteering for these events in 2020, look for announcements in the Bluewave Newsletter early in the Fall 2020 Term.
The Office of Recruitment and Admissions wishes everyone a safe and joyful holiday season. We greatly appreciate the support provided across the College to help conduct outreach as well as onboard students on their educational journey at FSCJ. We look forward to continued partnerships in the year ahead and continuing our efforts to promote access and equity as part of our mission to promote lifelong educational opportunities across Northeast Florida.
