More than 70 people from the College and community took advantage of the free health-related information, education and resources available on June 11.

The Health Literacy Fair kicked off with a wellness walk. Health education sessions were provided throughout the day on sexually transmitted diseases, sports rehabilitation and physical therapy, falls prevention and dynamic stretching. Attendees also had the opportunity to learn about the Affordable Care Act from Florida Blue representatives.

Many community partners supported the event including Mayo Clinic, Brooks Rehabilitation and Vision is Priceless. Students had the opportunity to engage with the community by assisting with blood donations and oral health screenings. The nursing programs and all allied health programs at the College also participated.

Interpreters from FSCJ’s Sign Language Interpretation Program (SLIP) helped make the Health Literacy Fair more accessible by being on hand for the local hearing-impaired community. “All 12 of us found this event extremely beneficial on so many levels,” said Instructional Program Manager Lori Cimino. “We took the opportunity to work one-on-one with students using authentic examples of interpreting for them to
develop their skills.”
 
Executive Chair for the School of Social, Behavioral and Health Sciences/North Campus President Dr. Sandy Robinson said she feels that this event has positively impacted the lives of the attendees.
