Chief of Staff Katie Ross

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you found your way back to FSCJ.
I’m a proud native Floridian and grew up right here in Northeast Florida. I had the pleasure of starting my career at the College right out of graduate school. Spending my formative work years with FSCJ was such a blessing. I had the wonderful opportunity to join JCCI as a Community Planner then later ran U.S. Senator Bill Nelson’s Jacksonville office. I loved my time with the College and always had an intent to return to the field of higher education. When I saw the opportunity to marry my interests, I jumped at the chance. Considering I’m a daughter and granddaughter of school teachers, education is a family tradition.

2. In your new role as Chief of Staff, what does your average day look like?
No two days are the same! I have a wide range of duties including managing the Office of the College President, serving on Executive Cabinet, serving as the internal staff member for Government Relations as well as serving in an advisory role to Dr. Bioteau. One thing I definitely do every day is take the stairs instead of the elevator!

3. What has surprised you most about how the College has changed in the recent years?
I have been so impressed with the focus on student success. From the ERP implementation to the food pantry, everything the College does ultimately leads back to serving our students. Faculty and staff have clearly demonstrated their devotion to the College’s mission and I continue to be inspired by them.

4. What does “student success” mean to you?
To me, the term means keeping the interest of the student at the forefront. We want our students to have all the support they need to be successful in school and in life. Faculty and staff play a critical role in assisting our students in achieving this goal.

5. How do you spend your downtime?
I love to exercise! Weightlifting and spinning are my go-to activities. I also like to read, watch movies and listen to music.
