Remembering President George H.W. Bush's FSCJ Connection

Jun 9, 2022, 12:53 PM

As our nation honors the legacy of former President George H.W. Bush, we take great pride in remembering his connection to FSCJ. On March 16, 1991, FSCJ’s Upsilon Eta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society, under the leadership of Dr. Henry Moreland, retired FSCJ Professor of Psychology and PTK Faculty Advisor Emeritus, was honored by President Bush as the nation’s 405th “Point of Light.” The recognition commended the College’s “outstanding work” on behalf of the community and its “active engagement in helping others.”

Established in 1968, the Upsilon Eta chapter celebrates a proud history of service to the community. Each year, Phi Theta Kappa members join Dr. Mary James, Professor of Chemistry and PTK Faculty Advisor, in the Honors in Action collaboration with the Jacksonville Spina Bifida Association as well as other community service activities. Through its celebration of academic excellence and commitment to serving others, the Upsilon Eta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa remains a “Point of Light” for FSCJ and the greater Jacksonville community.
