SAP Appeal & Appeal Process

If you have an extenuating circumstance(s) for not “Meeting SAP,” like an accident, medical situation, death in your immediate family, or a major challenge that was out of your control, you have the option to submit a SAP Appeal.

What is an SAP Appeal?

It is an opportunity to submit a document to the Financial Aid office explaining why you were unsuccessful in your classes and request to continue receiving financial aid funding to pay for them.

What is the baseline of knowledge for Navigators to give to students? Is it ALL unsuccessful terms?

How do I start an SAP Appeal?

  1. Speak with a Student Success Navigator to discuss your “Not Meets” Status
    • This will include checking your GPA and credit attempts
    • Extenuating circumstance(s)
    • Adding the SAP appeal to your Task List
  2. Make sure to open the Satisfactory Academic Progress Task link and follow the instructions.
  3. Fill out the SAP Appeal Form
  4. Write your statement explaining (in detail) your extenuating circumstance(s).
    • Each extenuating circumstance should match up with EVERY semester in which you earned a W or F grade.
    • Keep in mind that once you submit your Appeal to financialaid@fscj.edu for a decision, you will not be allowed to submit additional documentation to help your case.
    • Incomplete SAP appeals will be denied.
    • Appealing 150%, make sure to answer the following questions:
      • Since you have already spoken with a Navigator, you can now explain why all the credits you have attempted in your total college credit lifetime exceed your current Program of Study’s credit limit.
      • How this particular degree is going to help you meet your educational and future career goals.
  5. Gather all supporting documents to match each circumstance notated in your statement
  6. Meet with an Academic and Career Advisor to create an Academic Degree Plan and sign your Appeal form.
  7. It is advised that you are registered in at least one class in case your SAP Appeal is approved.
    • Payment arrangements for the class can include:
      • Cash or Credit
      • Alternative funding sources
      • Tuition Installment Plan
    • If your appeal is approved, and you plan to use FAFSA Loans to cover your tuition, you will need to be registered for a minimum of 6 credits to stay in compliance with your FAFSA Loan Agreement.
  8. Email your complete SAP Appeal Packet to financialaid@fscj.edu.
  9. Periodically check your SAP status to see if a SAP Appeal decision has been made.
    • SAP Appeal Decisions usually take about 30 calendar days
    • The decision will be emailed to your student email account
