Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE)

The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) assessment is an academic assessment that measures the skills and knowledge of adult learners in the areas of reading, mathematics, and language. A Preparing for the TABE (PDF) brochure is provided by the State of Florida for students and educators.

The TABE takes approximately 3 1/2 to 4 hours to complete all three sections of the test.

Students testing for FSCJ workforce and career certificate program will not be assessed a fee. Please note that students must have an active FSCJ application on file to test at no charge. Students testing for institutions other than FSCJ will be assessed a fee as follows:

  • TABE Proctoring Fee for Non-FSCJ
  • TABE + Locator: $84
  • TABE Without Locator: $69
  • TABE Language Only: $33
  • TABE Math Only: $33
  • TABE Reading Only: $48

Students entering workforce and Career Certificate programs may be required to take the TABE. Before registering for this exam, students should consult a Career/Workforce program advisor to see which TABE test and scores are required for their program of interest.

A current, valid government-issued photo ID or current FSCJ student ID.

SB1720, Previous College Courses in English or Math with a grade of C or better, Minimum SAT or ACT scores, and/or Previous Placement Scores may qualify students for an exemption. Students should consult with a testing center staff member if they think they qualify for an exemption.

Retakes are permitted after (a) three months or (b) upon completion of 50 hours of documented instruction at a Florida State College at Jacksonville review class. Nonstudents are required to follow the same state retesting guidelines as Florida State College at Jacksonville students.
