Department of Defense Tuition Assistance

Active duty military students planning to use the Department of Defense (DOD) tuition assistance must first obtain a military tuition assistance voucher from their respective service branch. Military students and military family members stationed in Florida or within 50 miles of Florida may qualify for in-state tuition. Military students that do not qualify for in-state tuition but who are using a tuition assistance voucher will receive a military discount and pay no more than $250 per credit hour in tuition rates.

You may receive tuition assistance from the DOD and receive financial aid but you cannot use Post-9/11 GI Bill ® (Chapter 33) veteran benefits and tuition assistance from the DOD during the same term.

Each branch of the military handles tuition assistance differently.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Air Force: Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) receives Air Force tuition assistance vouchers electronically through the AI Portal.
  • Army: FSCJ receives Army tuition assistance vouchers and registrations electronically through GoArmy.com.
  • Coast Guard: Students using the Coast Guard tuition assistance programmust submit to Florida State College at Jacksonville the tuition assistance voucher form 1560.
  • Florida National Guard: The Florida National Guard office in St. Augustine provides FSCJ a list of students and approved courses for a term. The student is not required to submit any hard copy document to the College but must satisfy all requirements for eligibility of tuition assistance with the Guard Educational Officer. The student can register online or on campus and benefits will automatically apply.
  • Marines: Students using Marine tuition assistance must submit voucher form 1560.
  • Navy: Visit your Navy College office on base. FSCJ has enrollment coordinators at both Mayport and NAS to assist with the admission and registration process. Tuition assistance (TA) voucher form 1560/5 must be submitted to the campus business office to cover tuition. The TA form states how much the Navy will pay, what course is approved and what term/session is authorized. You must register within the approved session, course and amount before the College will bill the DOD. FSCJ will notify the DOD with the grade earned once the session ends.
