Search Amelia: FSCJ as Partner in Federal Grant by Department of Education

Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) is one of four partner institutions in the Florida Consortium on Inclusive Higher Education that was awarded a $2.5 million, five-year federal grant by the U.S. Department of Education to assist students with intellectual disabilities successfully transition into higher education.

The funds are being awarded from the Transition Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPSID) into Higher Education grant program.

The Florida Consortium on Inclusive Higher Education is led by the University of Central Florida (UCF) and includes the University of South Florida (USF) and Florida International University (FIU). The consortium will create and expand high-quality transition and postsecondary programs for students by working with key stakeholders and all Florida postsecondary programs for students with disabilities to align program curriculum and credentialing. It will also gather and share extensive research in this area through trainings, conferences and article submissions.

These funds will directly impact FSCJ’s Project Achieve/VERTICAL program allowing for additional resources to be devoted to identifying and securing work and internship opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“FSCJ is looking forward to collaborating with our fellow institutions to enhance the academic success and completion of these students,” said FSCJ Project Achieve Coordinator Rachel Rippey. “FSCJ is not only committed to providing accessible and affordable education programs and workforce opportunities to our students, but we are dedicated to helping ensure resources and opportunities are available for students throughout our region.”

To achieve its goals, the consortium will partner with the Florida Department of Education’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and its Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services.

The consortium will also collaborate with other partners to design and deliver professional development, an annual symposium, a strategic program evaluation and ensure reporting to and collaboration with the national transition coordinating center.
