Ninth Annual Family Literacy Fair Sept. 17 at Florida State College North Campus

The North Campus of Florida State College at Jacksonville is presenting its Ninth Annual Family Literacy Fair for residents of Duval and Nassau counties on Sept. 17, 2011, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Fair takes place at the North Campus, 4501 Capper Road in Jacksonville (I-95 to Dunn Ave. or I-295 to Dunn Ave.). It is free and open to the public, with books and lunch included.

The annual event is a celebration of the joys and benefits of reading, especially reading as a family activity. Those attending will enjoy free books and a wide variety of fun, free and helpful activities, including storytelling by the Northside Storytellers; reading by Jaguars Cheerleaders and a variety of individuals; poetry, face painting and fingernail painting; a golf clinic (compliments of the First Tee of Jacksonville), an illusionist; dental care presentations and many other attractions. Free books funded by Target; children’s books donated by author Roger Moore, comic books contributed by Black Sheep, and numerous other donors; SYSCO is providing free hot-dogs. Additionally, North Campus welcomes Target as a new sponsor through a grant to support the cause of Literacy.

Local children's book authors Rick Cannizzaro (Ludi, the Loggerhead Turtle) and Mary Ann Bator-Gray (Jaden and the Weejum) will also be on hand to share their works.

MEDIA NOTE: Activities cover everything from the arts to sports and from magic to health care. There will be workshops for teens and children; Northside Storytellers’ League, an illusionist and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will have equipment on display. In 2010, an estimated 1,200 people attended. About 1,500 are expected this year.
