...and What Parents Ought to Know to Keep their Millennials Safe

In the aftermath of a teen suicide in the UK, reportedly brought on by incidents of cyberbullying, WJCT's First Coast Connect Host Melissa Ross wanted an expert to discuss new trends in social networks for teens--and what parents should know to keep their kids safe. It's an environment in which teens are dumping Facebook (to avoid parents!) and signing on to platforms unfamiliar to many over a certain age-- sites like 4Chan and Ask.fm (the site used by the cyberbullying-related suicide victim). FSCJ Communications Professor Rawlslyn Francis, along with Daniel Foundation Assistant Communications Director Leah Goodwyne (formerly of FSCJ) explained the trend, and left some good advice for parents who may not know what their kids are up to, and how to help them play safe on social media. This "Tech Tuesday" segment aired Aug. 20, 2013 on WJCT, FM 89.9 and on the WJCT.org radio program First Coast Connect. You can view a text version of this story on WJCT.org.
