Florida State College at Jacksonville is planning to have its student housing in Downtown Jacksonville at 20 W. Adams St. fully occupied by the fall of next year.
The student housing development, which Danis is acting as the contractor for, will be completed by late spring or early summer, FSCJ Communications Director Jill Johnson said.
She said some students may move in for the summer term for a Summer Bridge program.
In all, 59 people will occupy the six-story space, including the director of housing. There will be four residential assistants in the building.
The suites will vary in terms of bedrooms and bathrooms, but the suites will be three bedroom, two bathroom from the third to the sixth floors. There will be a four bedroom, two bathroom suite on the second floor in order to give space for an apartment for the director of housing.
The first floor café, which will double as a showcase for FSCJ's culinary program, plans to open around the same time as students start arriving. A name hasn't been decided for the café, but Johnson said the college is actively looking at possibilities and potential donors.
The pricing for students who decide to move into the housing will be paid per term, and will be somewhere between $3,300 and $3,700, and will also be based on the space occupied, and on factors like whether the student has a private bathroom.
The total project cost is about $6.2 million, with building owner Eugene Profit contributing some of that cost, and another part of it – about $1.2 million – being covered by a $600,000 grant and a $600,000 forgivable loan from the city. The school will be able to use about $60,000 per year to cover any shortfall between student rentals and financial obligations to the developer.
All FSCJ students have the ability to apply, and that process will begin early in 2017.
