From Edu Jax reporter/blogger Khristopher Brooks, good news for first-time-in-college students attending Florida State College at Jacksonville!

Edu Jax, Education news and issues from around the First Coast:

"Bank of America's Charitable Foundation gave the Florida State College at Jacksonville's foundation two grants totaling $20,000. FSCJ plans to use the money to fund three programs: Pathways to College, College Reach Out and Take Stock in Children. Pathways to College helps students 16 and older get their GED. College Reach Out and Take Stock in Children helps the financial burden for low-income, first-generation college students."

From the news release:

[“Helping individuals obtain the education and training they need for 21st century jobs is critical to Duval County’s economic growth,” said Maggie Hightower, FSCJ Foundation Executive Director.  “That’s why we’re proud to partner with Bank of America to provide opportunities for success to individuals in our community.”

The Pathways to College program for High School Equivalency is designed for students, age 16 and older, who would like to obtain their high school equivalency by completing and passing the GED examination.  The grant funds awarded will help FSCJ provide vital services to help students achieve their academic and vocational goals by meeting the special needs of Pathways students who have the greatest risk factors and disadvantages.

Both the College Reach Out Program and Take Stock in Children program at FSCJ work to provide a seamless college transition for low-income first-generation students and their families.

“Florida State College has been in the forefront in this community by offering educational opportunities for all students. One of Bank of America’s major goals is to prepare students for career and workforce success,” concluded Greg Smith, northeast Florida market president for Bank of America.

AND--these funds are already being put to use.

"These funds have supported college access and financial learning instruction for our students and parents/families. This year’s financial learning focus has resulted in students becoming more aware of the management of their dollars and cents, especially as it relates to their goals," said Kevin
Cotton, FSCJ director of recruitment.

”In addition, the endeavors have helped us create relationships with the UF Extension offices in Duval and Nassau counties and local credit unions. As well, we’ve strengthened our partnership with the Real$ense Prosperity Campaign. All for the benefit of the families we serve," said Cotton. Bravo!]
