FSCJ Women’s Basketball Player Receives State Scholar Athlete Award

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) Women’s Basketball Player Ameera Thomas was selected for the Sandy Miller Award by the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA). This award is presented each year to the top female basketball player in the state for academic performance, community service and leadership.

Ameera’s academic successes include a 3.95 GPA and her induction into FSCJ's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), a national academic honor society. She routinely offers tutoring support to her own teammates as well.

Within the community, she has volunteered her time through various FSCJ and community events, including participating in downtown and beach clean-ups, sorting supplies at the Baby Luv Pregnancy and Baby Center with Community Health Outreach (CHO), packing meals for Feeding Northeast Florida and helping develop local youth through weekend basketball games.

“Our FSCJ family congratulates Ameera for this tremendous recognition of her exemplary leadership, academic excellence and selfless generosity,” said College President John Avendano. “We are so proud of Ameera and all our student athletes for their achievements, in their sports, within their classwork and throughout our community.”

During the 2021-22 season, Ameera served as the captain for FSCJ’s Women’s Basketball team, appearing in 19 games and averaging 11.3 points and 5.3 rebounds to become the team’s leading scorer.

“Ameera is a dedicated student-athlete with high character and is committed to her academic success,” said Co-Athletic Director and Head Women’s Basketball Coach Diana Couch. “Her off-the-court activities and involvement are a great measure of the person she is. Ameera is always putting others first, which is very indicative of her role on our team as a captain.”
