FSCJ’s Center for Civic Engagement to Host JaxbyJax Sampler Reading Events

WHAT:

Florida State College at Jacksonville’s (FSCJ) JaxbyJax Reading Series will kick off its reintroduction to Jacksonville with free JaxbyJax Sampler events featuring brief readings from a sampling of JaxbyJax 2016 authors. These events will serve as the precursor to a monthly JaxbyJax Reading Series set to begin in spring 2017.

Featured writers will include:

1) Dr. Tim Gilmore, an FSCJ English professor, the JaxbyJax Literary Arts Festival organizer, creator of jaxpsychogeo.com and author of books about such northeast Florida residents as the humanitarian leader Eartha White, the pseudo-serial killer Ottis Toole and the book magnate Ron Chamblin, will read from his newest book, “Devil in the Baptist Church: Bob Gray's Unholy Trinity.”

2) Caleb Sarvis, a fiction editor for Jacksonville's Bridge Eight Magazine, who will read from his locally set collection of short stories, “Broken Record Nostalgia.”

3) Heather Peters, a three-time featured JaxbyJax writer and author of “Sinking in the Stillness,” a memoir of her travels in Provence, will read a new piece called “Superstitious.”

4) Frances Driscoll, a second-time featured JaxbyJax writer, will read from her nationally acclaimed autobiographical poetry collection, “The Rape Poems.”

5) Award-winning journalist Tricia Booker will read from her book, “A Place of Peace and Crickets: How Adoption, Heartache and Love Built a Family.”

Along with Dr. Gilmore, featured authors will include:

1) Sohrab Fracis, who won the prestigious Iowa Short Fiction Award in 2001 for his short story collection, “Ticket to Minto: Stories of India and America,” will read from his newly published novel, “Go Home.”

2) Fred Dale, whose poetry has been published in numerous journals nationally, as well as in Jacksonville's Perversion Magazine and Bridge Eight, will read from his upcoming JaxbyJax presentation, “The Cockroach Talks to His Leg and Other Odd Perspectives.”

3) Nan Kavanaugh, a seventh-generation northeast Floridian and editor of First Coast Magazine, will be reading from her novel which is based on a true story, “White Gloved.”
