Colin Beavan’s book “No Impact Man: The Adventures of a Guilty Liberal Who Attempts to Save the Planet, and the Discoveries He Makes About Himself and Our Way of Life in the Process,” delivers the details of his family’s year-long experiment of cutting back radically on consumption, stemming from the theory that a change in those behaviors can improve lives. No car. No air conditioning. No electricity. No processed food—only local, sustainable foods. A subsequent documentary about the same subject by the same name was released in Sept. 2009. Beavan will deliver a free and open to the public lecture March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Wilson Center, on FSCJ's South Campus, 11901 Beach Blvd., east of St. Johns Bluff Road. In addition to the lecture, Beavan will also hold a post-event book signing. Student art and projects related to their experience will be on display.
Also of impact, especially to those looking for a job: Downtown Campus is offering two free workshops at 101 W. State St., in the Main Lobby, Bldg. A, this week:
1. “Résumé Builder”—March 9, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. (Bring your résumé for review by career counselors!)
2. “Preparing for a Career Fair”—March 10, from 1-2 p.m.
The workshops are free and open to the public. The Résumé Builder workshop will add a little fun element. The counselors are dressing in construction worker get-up. I can almost feel the thump-thump-thump of "YMCA." But the workshops are serious. Everyone attending is encouraged to bring a résumé copy, which the counselors will review and suggest improvements on the spot to help you nail that new job.
There is a purpose in all this. Downtown Campus will host a Spring Career Fair on March 22 from 9 a.m.-noon. It's free and open to the public. More details on that later, or you can look it up at http://www.floridastatecollegenetwork.com/press-releases/view/get-ready-for-spring-career-fair-with-free-workshops-hosted-by-florida-stat.
