Automated Majors System Costs FSCJ $3.4 Million in Financial Aid Repayments

Based on a recent program review by the U.S. Department of Education, FSCJ has been asked to repay $3.4 million for the disbursement of financial aid toward ineligible courses and programs. FSCJ has 45 days from date of notice to appeal the U.S. Department of Education’s ruling.

Reported in the Florida Times-Union March 25, 2014: Florida State College at Jacksonville must repay the U.S. DOE $3.4 million in improperly distributed Pell Grants and other financial aid. The financial aid was wrongly paid due to an automated program that changed students’ majors (without their consent), which allowed the financial aid awards.

“We will respond to the U.S. DOE within the required 45 days,” said FSCJ President Cynthia Bioteau in a brief statement. “Our commitment to moving forward remains steadfast. Serving the educational needs of students in our community is a guiding principal for Florida State College at Jacksonville.”

The college can apply for a payment plan to repay the $3.4 million; pay back the full amount; or appeal the decision, within the 45-day window, after which interest will accrue.
