American Board of Funeral Service Education Announces Fall Scholarship Winners

The American Board of Funeral Service Education has awarded fall scholarships to six students who are attending accredited funeral service programs in the U.S., according to a news release.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The American Board of Funeral Service Education has awarded fall scholarships to six students who are attending accredited funeral service programs in the U.S., according to a news release.

The ABFSE Scholarship Committee evaluates applications on the basis of academics, financial need, work history, community service and letters of recommendation along with an essay describing the reason(s) for choosing funeral service as a career.

Scholarships are awarded twice each year and applications must be submitted by March 1 or Sept. 1 in order to be considered. For fall 2014, $8,550 was awarded to six students. The scholarship program is made possible by the support of various funeral service associations and suppliers. Students enrolled in the 57 ABFSE accredited programs are eligible for consideration.

Fall scholarship recipients are:

  • Teddy Edwards; University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, Oklahoma
  • Ashley Martin; Florida State College at Jacksonville, Jacksonville, Florida
  • Lisa McKinney; Milwaukee Area Technical College, West Allis, Wisconsin
  • Julie Moen; University of Minnesota; Minneapolis, Minnesota
  • Michelle Morrow; Carl Sandburg College; Galesburg, Illinois
  • Jayanna Weaver; Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois

Funds for the scholarships were provided by the National Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association, Batesville Casket Co., NOMIS Publications and Pure Country, Inc.
