Air Traffic Controller Hiring Freeze Could Delay Flights and Careers

Nov 1, 2022, 10:58 AM
Thousands of air traffic controllers, hired in the 1980s after President Reagan fired striking workers, are being forced to retire because of their age.

With a federal hiring freeze, they may not be replaced. How will that affect air travel, air safety and how about the careers of those training to be air traffic controllers? FSCJ Aviation Programs Manager Sam Fischer explains the dilemma and possible outcomes for travelers, but also for students who enrolled in air traffic controller training programs in anticipation of the upcoming retirements. Several of the students express their feelings about the issue. Apparently Congress holds the key. Reported by Action News Reporter Amanda Warford, Sept. 5, 2013, at 10 p.m. on Fox 30 WAWS and at 11 p.m. on CBS 47 WTEV.
