Jacksonville, Fl. — FSCJ is hosting an informational session on Thursday, while UNF is inviting students to meet with recruiters

After ITT Technical Institute abruptly shuttered the doors to its campuses nationwide, students are left picking up the pieces to their educational futures.

For students left behind by the closure of ITT Tech’s Jacksonville campus, local schools are stepping up to help them bounce back.

Florida State College at Jacksonville is waiving its $25 application fee for recent ITT Tech students and hosting an informational session for students on Thursday, Sept. 15 at its Deerwood Center from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Students will be able to meet with recruiters to discuss which credits can transfer and how they can continue their education.

Since FSCJ has a free-flowing academic calendar, displaced ITT Tech students can still enroll in time for the “B” session beginning on Monday, Sept. 19. There is also a “C” session beginning in Oct.

University of North Florida admissions staff reached out to ITT Tech following the announcement last week, looking to meet with students in the same way they did when the Art Institute closed its Jacksonville campus in 2015.

“The timing is not ideal,” Chad Learch, a director in UNF’s enrollment services department said. “We started classes several weeks ago."

Even though enrollment in UNF’s fall semester is out of the question, recruiters are inviting students to discuss their future at the university, whether that be for the spring semester or further down the road.

Learch says it is difficult to know what credits will transfer from ITT Tech, and some students may have to start over.

“Seeking a higher education is one of the most important personal decision anyone can make,” Learch said. “We hope to help anybody plan a path to achieve that goal.”

At the writing of this article, UNF has not received a response from ITT Tech.
