When a pope retires--which almost never happens--what happens next?

Nov 1, 2022, 10:58 AM
Pope Benedict XVI announced February 11 his plans to retire on February 28. Many were shocked--this hasn't happened in 600 years. What is the protocol?

Florida State College Professor of Religion John Oliver, a former Catholic priest, was invited to explain the possibilities to "On Point" Host Shannon Ogden, in a segment that aired Feb. 24 on WJXX ABC 25. As rare as a pope's retirement is, how does the Roman Catholic church react? The College of Cardinals usually meets to elect a new pope when a sitting pope dies. How do they decide when to meet and what is the role of the retired pope--who once again becomes a cardinal upon retirment? Many questions are raised and the answers are coming slowly. Dr. Oliver gives his opinions based on his knowledge as a Roman catholic, a professor of Religion, a former priest and a theologian.
