TU: Student dies after firefighter application exercise at Florida State College at Jacksonville

A student died Saturday morning after participating in a firefighter application exercise at the Fire Academy of the South, which is part of Florida State College at Jacksonville, college officials said.
The student, whose name wasn’t released because of patient privacy laws, died after being taken to Mayo Clinc Jacksonville, said Jill Johnson, college director of marketing and communications.
Johnson said to participate in the fire academy, people first go through an application process that includes a physical ability test.
“The FSCJ community is deeply saddened to report that a student has died following a firefighter application exercise. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family as we grieve the loss of a young man with a desire to serve others through public service. As we await medical results, we stand ready to assist the family. Our 24/7 student assistance program is available to students by calling (904) 384-1800,” she said in a written statement.
The academy is located at FSCJ’s South Campus, 11901 Beach Blvd.
