TU: FSCJ Adds Women’s Cross Country, Drops Tennis

Florida State College at Jacksonville has added women’s cross country and dropped women’s tennis in its athletic program, the school announced Thursday.

The move revives one of FSCJ’s most successful former programs, but closes down one that posted three top-five national finishes and fielded a National Junior College Athletic Association champion within the last five years.

The school, then known as Florida Junior College, won NJCAA team titles in women’s cross country in 1982 and 1983.

Sylvia Sanchez raced to the individual national championship in 1989 with a time of 17:12, which still ranks fifth all-time in the NJCAA championship record book.

The Blue Wave tennis program had struggled in the last two seasons, but finished fourth in the NJCAA in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Esther Zuniga won the national singles title in 2013.

Cross country joins the school’s other teams in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball.
