TEDxFSCJ to Host 2021 “Wonder” Event

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Join TEDxFSCJ for the sixth annual conference, “Wonder,” which will examine how each of us are united by the common capacity to feel astonishment at the beauty of the universe and the fathomless depths of human creativity.

Hosted by FSCJ Student Maiya Elaine and Action News Jax Reporter and Weekend Anchor Lorena Inclán, “Wonder” will welcome eight speakers who will help attendees experience the power wonder has to captivate, challenge and inspire.

Speakers include:

  • Andrew Adams, whose fight against his school district’s restroom policy was the first trial of its kind in federal court and became a significant victory for transgender students. He is now a University of Central Florida student, writer, speaker and community activist.
  • Inderjit (Vicky) Basra, who is the president and CEO of the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center and advocate for gender equality and girls’ rights. She is a contributor to news media on issues related to commercial sexual exploitation, diversity and women’s leadership.
  • Heather Campbell, who serves as a counselor and rehabilitation trainer at FSCJ’s Vision Education and Rehabilitation Center (VERC) and focuses her attention in fields dealing with grief and loss.
  • Dima Kroma, who is a painter and software engineer, utilizes her passion for art to tell people about her Syrian culture and encourage open mindedness and inclusion.
  • Donte Palmer, whose Instagram post of him changing his son’s diaper on a public restroom floor went viral and inspired the global awareness campaign, “Squat for Change,” a nonprofit with a mission to empower caregivers through education and inclusion and champions hands-on fatherhood.
  • Andrea Reyes, who is an immigration attorney and advocate for the oppressed. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Central Florida Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and has received multiple awards for pro bono service and advocacy.
  • Kalai Sankar, who founded Shiva Robotics Academy, a robotics education institution geared to K-8 students, and has helped introduce after-school robotics programs in more than 25 Title I schools in Jacksonville. Also known as Coach K to her students, she was named Florida’s Best Robotics Coach.
  • Sarah Clarke Stuart, who is a professor, community volunteer, author and freelance writer. Drawing from the traumatic experiences she faced with her own child who battled addiction, she is dedicated to serving as an advocate for families in recovery.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, often in the form of short talks delivered by leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED conferences, intimate TED Salons and thousands of independently organized TEDx events around the world. Videos of these talks are made available, free, on TED.com and other platforms. Audio versions of TED Talks are published to TED Talks Daily, available on all podcast platforms.

TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; TEDx, which licenses thousands of individuals and groups to host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities; The Audacious Project, which surfaces and funds critical ideas that have the potential to impact millions of lives; TED Translators, which crowdsources the subtitling of TED Talks so that big ideas can spread across languages and borders; and the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED also offers TED@Work, a program that reimagines TED Talks for workplace learning. TED also has a growing library of original podcasts, including The TED Interview with Chris Anderson, WorkLife with Adam Grant, Pindrop and TEDxSHORTS.
