TEDxFSCJ presents “Faces of Engagement: A Portrait Series”

Nov 1, 2022, 10:58 AM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – TEDxFSCJ announces the opening reception for its upcoming art show: Faces of Engagement: A Portrait Series. This event will take place Thursday, September 22, 2016, 5-8 p.m. at the FSCJ Downtown Campus Gallery.

Inspired by TED Prize winner JR’s Inside Out Project, TEDxFSCJ has put together an art show featuring portraits of people – students, faculty, staff and Jacksonville community members – who are deeply invested in making a difference. These portraits will be featured at the Faces of Engagement art show leading up to our main event on October 8 as well as on www.tedxfscj.com, and will draw attention to those who voluntarily engage to make our world a better place. Our theme is both a statement of our intent to engage with ideas, social issues and various Jacksonville communities and a challenge to our audience to take the next step after the event to truly engage with what they’ve heard. We hope to draw speakers who will increase our knowledge, ignite our passions or broaden our experience of the world.

In addition to showcasing the work of local artists, Dr. Mary Rose, FSCJ’s Director of Service Learning and Civic Engagement, will speak at 6 p.m. on the College’s focus on service learning and engagement. The artists include:

    ·       Brandi Angel Bleak

    ·       Nicole Radacz

    ·       Kevin Labrecque

    ·       Jennifer Grey

Cost: Free

When: Thursday, September 22, 2016, 5-8 p.m. Images will remain in the gallery through October 14. Gallery hours vary, but will be available during the TEDxFSCJ main event, Engage, on October 8, 2016, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Contact Brenda Mills at the Downtown Campus at (904) 633-8313 for additional hours.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or fewer) delivered by today's leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED's annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and made available, free, onTED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; the annual million-dollar TED Prize, which funds exceptional individuals with a "wish," or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx, which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
