Philosophy and the Hunger Games: FSCJ's Michaud explores real-world similarities

Nov 1, 2022, 10:58 AM
Philosophy Professor Nicolas Michaud was a guest on WJCT's First Coast Connect to talk about the popular film (and novel) series "The Hunger Games."

Is Panem, the imaginary country in which "The Hunger Games" is set, just a stand-in for the United States, under extremely horrific conditions?  In his discussion with host Melissa Ross about "Catching Fire,"  the second film in "The Hunger Games" series, Michaud "asks that fans look deeper than just the subtext of a dystopian United States, and look at instead how the setting parallels the role the U.S. plays on a global scale."

"Our society throws out what third world countries manufacture for us — where those third world countries — will never have the opportunity to purchase for themselves," he said.

Michaud is a Philosophy professor at both Florida State College at Jacksonville and University of North Florida.
