On the Fiftieth Anniversary of the War on Poverty: Who is Winning?

Nov 1, 2022, 10:58 AM
Fifty years ago, Lyndon Baines Johnson, president of the richest nation in the world, declared a War on Poverty. First Coast News Anchor and "On Point" Host Shannon Ogden invited FSCJ Political Science Professor Marcella Washington to provide an assessment on the success--or failure--of LBJ's War.

January 8, 1964, President Lyndon Baines Johnson declared in his first State of the Union Address an unconditional War on Poverty. "It will not be a short or an easy struggle," he said, "... but we shall not rest until that war is won." Florida State College at Jacksonville Political Science Professor Marcella Washington, Ph.D., talks with On Point Host Shannon Ogden about the relative success or failure of that war, what's working, what hindrances there are, and what are the possible keys to winning this war, or at least making greater progress.
