WJXT Channel 4 reporter Kumasi Aaron reports: Professor Betina Malhotra, Ph.D., FSCJ coordinator of the playground restoration, said her FSCJ Education students make learning hands-on and infused with technology. So students at Justina Road Elementary came up with the restoration plans themselves!

Naval Station Mayport, St. Johns Riverkeeper and Home Depot’s Team Depot partnered with faculty and students from Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) to restore the playground at Justina Road Elementary School on a beautiful Saturday morning,  April 27 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. In addition to the installation of playground and sporting equipment, restoration included environmental touches such as the installation of rain barrels and rain gardens.

This community-based collaborative project included the help of about 100 active duty volunteers from Naval Station Mayport, military veterans, about 100 FSCJ volunteers, students from the local High School Avid Program as well as students and teachers from Justina Road Elementary School.
This is the culmination of an ongoing FSCJ project. Since last year, Education students at FSCJ have been developing lesson plans and providing community service projects to Justina Road Elementary.
