The money will go towards FSCJ starting up environmental training programs to clean up Brownfields sites – or sites contaminated by hazardous materials that complicate their reuse later – in areas that are economically distressed, according to a news release.

The training serves two purposes: it both cleans up the land for future use and prepares students for careers in environmental fields.

The EPA program has a history spanning almost two decades. Since its inception in 1998, it has provided 256 job training grants worth a total of $54 million. About 14,000 individuals have gone through the training since and 10,000 have secured employment as a direct result.

FSCJ is the only college in Florida to receive the grant. Other schools awarded the grant include St. Louis Community College in Missouri and Tarrant County College District in Texas.
