In the Times-Union: Dual Enrollment: College Classes at High School

Nov 1, 2022, 10:58 AM
A change in Florida state law requires school districts to pay tuition and fees to colleges for students taking dual enrollment classes on college campuses--but not for college classes taken at their high schools.

Growing numbers of Duval County high school students in dual enrollment classes are taking advantage of a smart way for students and their parents to save big money--as much as the cost of the first two years of college. In the past, dual-enrollment students attending classes at Florida State College at Jacksonville had their tuition costs absorbed by the College. New legislation requires school districts, including Duval County Public Schools, to reimburse colleges for dual enrollment classes taken on the college campus. While some students continue to take classes at FSCJ campuses, DCPS is saving money by having their teachers credentialed to teach college-level classes do so at the high schools.

One Sandalwood High School student, Geraldine Sequeira, describes her experience in terms of the effort she has to put forth and the benefit she receives through dual enrollment, in this video interview with the Times-Union. Sandalwood High School has a dual enrollment arrangement with FSCJ's South Campus. Click here to read this article in The Florida Times-Union. (Subscription or membership may be required.)
