Florida State College at Jacksonville's new $10,000 logistics degree will help make the area more competitive in that field, the school's new president said Monday.

The college's mission requires it to be responsive to the needs of industry, President Cynthia Bioteau said during an appearance at the Jacksonville Port Authority on her first day on the job — and one way of doing that is through things like the low-cost degree, which should be offered next year.

"That's the role we play," she said. "We can constantly be evolving and changing our logistics program based on what industry partners tells us they need."

Bioteau discussed the degree during an appearance at the port by Gov. Rick Scott to push for his proposed budget, which includes money for Jaxport.

Scott had challenged the 23 schools in the state college system to devise degrees that cost less than $10,000, particularly in areas with heightened job potential.

Logistics meets that challenge, Bioteau said.

"It's an industry that will bring businesses in."
