WHAT: Thousands of Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) students will be celebrated for their outstanding determination, dedication and hard work at the 50th annual Commencement Ceremony on Thursday, May 11. FSCJ President Dr. Cynthia Bioteau and the FSCJ District Board of Trustees will award diplomas to students who have earned a bachelor’s and/or associate degree.
Approximately 4,758 FSCJ students have earned at least one degree for the 2016-17 academic year, with some students earning more than one degree. Of these, 3,126 are associate in arts degrees, 933 are associate in science degrees and 699 are bachelor’s degrees.
The 2017 keynote speaker is Mr. Steve Piscitelli. In addition to his more than 30 years of teaching experience, the retired FSCJ professor has published 11 books, including 2017’s “Stories About Teaching, Learning and Resilience: No Need to be an Island.”
Additionally, Dr. Bioteau will present a Distinguished Alumni Award to Mike Schneider, co-founder and CEO of The Loop Pizza Grill, a regional restaurant chain with 16 locations in Florida and North Carolina. Schneider graduated from FSCJ (formerly known as Florida Junior College) in 1970 and has dedicated more than 40 years to the restaurant industry.
The faculty and student procession will begin promptly at 3:45 p.m. with the ceremony immediately following at 4 p.m.
