Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) student Stephon Green-Monroe was named a 2016 Newman Civic Fellows Award winner.

The award is given to college student leaders across the nation who demonstrate an investment in finding solutions for challenges in their communities through service, research and advocacy.

The program is presented by Campus Compact, a national coalition of nearly 1,100 colleges and universities dedicated to campus-based civic engagement and is supported by the KPMG Foundation and the Newman’s Own Foundation.

Mr. Green-Monroe was nominated for the award by FSCJ President Dr. Cynthia Bioteau. “He strives not only to improve his own life but also to serve as a role model to his fellow students,” said President Bioteau in the nomination. “He truly displays leadership by example and uses his own experiences as evidence of the power of hard work.”

In his personal statement, Mr. Green-Monroe noted his desire to help and encourage his fellow students by volunteering his time as a math tutor, a subject he had struggled with in his past. He said, “Through this life-changing experience, I have been able to use the skills that I have learned throughout my college career to make a positive impact on the FSCJ student community through the Math Tutoring Lab.”

Mr. Green-Monroe is working toward earning his Associate in Science Degree in Radiography and anticipates graduating in 2017.
