Florida State College at Jacksonville’s (FSCJ) athletic department is excited to welcome Barvenia Wooten as the BlueWave Women’s Head Basketball Coach.

Wooten has more than 15 years of collegiate coaching experience. Most recently, Coach Wooten has been in the community developing the Jacksonville franchise of the Women’s American Basketball League (WABL-Hoops) while serving as vice president of operations for the WABL.

“It is with great enthusiasm and gratitude to be named as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at FSCJ and join the BlueWave family,” said Coach Wooten. “I am thankful to President Dr. Cynthia Bioteau and Interim Athletic Director Ginny Alexander for giving me this opportunity to lead the Florida State College at Jacksonville Women’s Basketball Team. I am committed and determined to continue the winning legacy at FSCJ by providing a competitive, challenging and exciting environment that will encourage and empower our players to be champions on the court and in the classroom.”

Prior to her role at WABL, Coach Wooten was the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at her alma mater Virginia Union University (VUU) from 2010-15. While at VUU, she was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Coach of the Year in 2012. That same year her team won the North Division of the CIAA.

Coach Wooten spent 11 years (1999-2010) as a Head Coach at Prince George’s Community College in Maryland. While there, her 2006 and 2010 teams finished fifth and 11th, respectively, in the National Junior College Athletic Associate (NJCAA) National Tournament. Coach Wooten was also named the NJCAA District J Women’s Division II Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2010.

“We are really excited to have Coach Wooten join our athletic department,” said FSCJ Interim Athletic Director Ginny Alexander. “She stood out in a number of ways, specifically her reputation for developing the whole student athlete, passion for the community and her competitiveness as a coach. Her head coaching experience and success at Prince George’s Community College and Virginia Union University will be instrumental in fostering the winning tradition of our Women’s Basketball Team at FSCJ.”

Coach Wooten is a highly decorated student athlete having been inducted into the VUU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. Eleven years later, she was honored by the CIAA as a Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary inductee.

Wooten has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Virginia Union University and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Nyack College.
