Community college compromise won't require FSCJ name change

TALLAHASSEE | Sen. Joe Negron has worked out a compromise with the state’s community college system that won’t require individual schools to change their names.

That means Florida State College at Jacksonville and St. Johns River State College won’t be required to remove the word “state” from their monikers. But the compromise with the 28-institution Florida College System would insert the word “community” in its name.

Negron, R-Stuart, will likely add the compromise language onto a bill that hits the Senate floor in the coming days.

His initial community college system proposal, which lifts a moratorium on new bachelor degrees but also refocuses these schools’ mission on two-year degrees, was found in Senate Bill 1252. But since that bill needs to pass the education budget committee, which has no more meetings scheduled this year, Negron needs to find another way to get his compromise into law.

“I’m confident we can find an appropriate way to enact the agreement that we reached,” he said Thursday.
